Explosion protection - Requirements of process measurement technology for the protection of plants against the occurrence of explosions

As early as the 19th century, explosions in the mining sector became more frequent due to industrialisation. Even then, the causes of explosions had to be investigated and researched with the aim of protecting people, the environment and plants. Mine gas and coal dust could ignite on open flames, sparks or hot surfaces and trigger an explosion. Regulations were derived from these findings to prevent explosions. Of course, the danger of an explosion still exists today, because wherever flammable substances in the form of gases, vapours, mists or dusts meet air and an ignition source, an explosion can occur with devastating consequences. Explosion protection to safeguard industrial plants is therefore still a top priority!

Explosion protection as a sub-field of safety engineering deals with protection against the risk of explosion and its effects. For plant operators, this means that all protective measures for integrated explosion protection must be carried out according to a specified sequence.

Field devices used in hazardous areas must undergo appropriate certification.

Across the European Union, Directive 2014/34/EU specifies the basic health and safety requirements, as well as the conformity assessment procedures. The Directive leaves the technical specification of the requirements to the harmonized European standards. Certification is carried out by accredited bodies.
